Revolutionary War Warrants Database Home Page

This database indexes 4,748 bounty land warrants issued by Virginia to veterans of the Revolutionary War. Warrants, the first step in land patenting, were given as payment for military services; the allotment was determined by the soldier's rank and time of service.

Search by veteran name, warrant number, and immediate assignee. Scanned images from the military warrants register are included for each warrant number. The "authorized" field identifies the patent(s) authorized by each warrant. Patents issued for service in the Revolutionary War are filed with the Virginia (VA) Patent Series, the Old Kentucky (OK) Patent Series, and the West of Tennessee River Military Patents Series or WTRM. (See the separate database on this website for additional information on the WTRM series.)  An asterisk beside the patent reference indicates the veteran's warrant is filed with the cited patent. Click the patent(s) listed in the "Authorized" field to view scanned images of all documents in the patent file. If the Warrant did not authorize a patent in Virginia's Military District in Kentucky, there is no further information available in the Kentucky Land Office for that warrant. Open the hyperlink "No Authorized Patents in Kentucky", for research suggestions.
