West of Tennessee River Non-Military Legislation Overview

In 1818 the Chickasaw Indian Nation signed a treaty relinquishing all lands east of the Mississippi River and north of the Mississippi state line to the United States. The U.S. Senate ratified the treaty on January 7, 1819. The state of Kentucky was enlarged by 2000 square miles from the Tennessee River westward to the Mississippi River. The area is known as the Jackson Purchase.

The Kentucky General Assembly passed legislation establishing two patent series for the Jackson Purchase area:  the West of Tennessee River Military Patents and the West of Tennessee River Non-Military Patents.

This website includes complete text of Acts of the Kentucky General Assembly regarding the establishment and subsequent amendments to the patenting process of West of Tennessee River Non-Military Patents. Legislation regarding the mapping of the Jackson Purchase is also included.
