Kentucky Student Mock Election

Welcome to the Kentucky Secretary of State Mock Election site, a partner election of the Youth Leadership Institute’s mock election- the nation’s largest, most secure, electronic, student-only voter education project!  The Office of the Secretary of State is happy to be coordinating this endeavor for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

In 2006, nearly 30,000 high school students from across the Commonwealth cast their ballots in the mock election.  This year, the Kentucky ballot will enable students to vote on the candidates for the state’s Constitutional offices, including Governor. Your students will be able to view a variety of final election statistics on the YLI website at the conclusion of the election. You will also have the option of allowing your students to vote by paper and then transmitting your results to YLI, or you can, for the first-time, arrange for your students to vote on-line.

In addition to the mock election, our partnership with YLI allows teachers, who choose to participate in the mock election, access to YLI’s on-line bank of lesson plans which are aimed at increasing civic literacy. The lesson plans provided on this site are already aligned with Kentucky’s academic standards, saving teachers precious development time.

This project is an exceptional tool for confronting, and in many cases, reversing the disturbing voting trends in the 18-24 year old demographic.  Engaging students with the core principles of democracy will foster an important behavior that they will carry far beyond the classroom.

YLI is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization based at the University of Virginia Center for Politics, which develops K-12 civic education resources designed to encourage student interest and participation in the political process. YLI receives its funding from the United States Congress, the Virginia General Assembly, and private donations.
