    Kentucky Secretary of State Elaine Walker announced record-setting voter registration today at the press conference held in the State Reception Room at the Capitol Building. Previous voter-registration records, set during the General Election in 2008, were surpassed this spring with an increase of 11,028 voters, bringing the Commonwealth’s registration numbers to 2,917,837 voters.

Citizens can check their voter registration, find driving directions to their polling location and preview their ballots – all by visiting the Vote Kentucky website at www.vote.ky.gov. This online service was created by the Office of the Secretary of State with support from the Kentucky State Board of Elections.

    Kentuckians who wish to vote in the upcoming May 17, 2011 primary election only have a few more days to register to vote. The deadline to register for the upcoming May primary is Monday, April 18, 2011. County Clerks’ offices throughout Kentucky will accept voter registration cards until the close of business that day. A postmark of April 18th is also required for all mail-in voter registration applications. Registration cards can be obtained online at www.vote.ky.gov/register.

    The deadline is approaching for candidates seeking public office as an independent or political group candidate in a partisan office to file their Statement-of-Candidacy form. In order to be placed on the ballot for the November 8th general election, the appropriate filing paperwork must be received by the Secretary of State’s office by Friday, April 1, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. The Statement-of-Candidacy form for independent candidates is required by KRS 118.365(5) which was enacted by the 2003 General Assembly.

Secretary of State Trey Grayson is reminding all Corporations, Limited Liability Companies (LLCs), Professional Services Corporations (PSCs), Partnerships, Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs), and Business Trusts that are registered with the state and that failed to file an annual report by June 30 of this year, that they are in bad standing and must file their annual report by October 31, 2010. Failure to do so will result in the entity being administratively dissolved or being revoked of its authority to do business in Kentucky.

    On its final day in session, the Kentucky legislature passed its second omnibus election bill in as many weeks. Among other provisions, Rep. Darryl Owens’ (D-Louisville) House Bill 152, provides more opportunities for citizens to serve as precinct election officers, allows for the appointment of county board of election members when there is no state party recognized executive committee in the county, and establishes a procedure for when a county clerk or sheriff is ill/incapacitated and can not perform his or her county board of elections duties.

    (Frankfort, KY) The Kentucky legislature took major steps, today, to tear down the bureaucratic red tape it takes to start a business in Kentucky. The legislature passed Senate Bills 150, 151, and 152, sponsored by Senator Tom Jensen (R-London), chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The bills include the Kentucky Business Filing Act and the 2010 Kentucky Entities Act. Most importantly, the legislation makes it easier for citizens who want to start their companies in Kentucky to navigate the complicated legislation that governs it.

    Throughout the country, many states have difficulty with “split election precincts” where the precinct boundary line crosses another boundary line. In Kentucky, this is typically seen in districts relating to cities and to school boards. In some instances, voters at these “split precincts” are given the wrong ballot. Governor Steve Beshear signed legislation, today, that will try to minimize this occurrence by providing for stronger data sharing between cities or school boards and county clerks. Senate Bill 35, sponsored by Senator Alice Forgy Kerr (R-Lexington), passed the legislature with overwhelming support earlier this month.

The new office will be located in RM 153 of the Capitol, marking the first time that all services of the Secretary of State will be located under the same roof in nearly five years.

    Businesses based in Kentucky, both foreign and domestic, are facing an upcoming deadline to file their annual reports with the Office of the Secretary of State.  Secretary of State Trey Grayson is reminding all Corporations, Limited Liability Companies (LLCs), and Professional Services Corporations (PSCs) that are registered with the state, that they are required to file an annual report by June 30 of each year; failure to do so will result in the company being listed as in bad standing with the office and could ultimately lead to the entity being administratively dissolved or being revoked of their authority to do business in Kentucky.

    State Treasurer Jonathan Miller and Secretary of State Trey Grayson announced today that their Cradle to College Commission has been awarded a grant, worth up to $100,000, from the Saving for Education, Entrepreneurship, and Downpayment (SEED) Policy and Practice Initiative. The grant gives the commission $20,000 per year for up to five years and provides assistance from CFED, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that works to expand economic opportunity.
