(Frankfort, KY) – Over 2.7 million citizens are eligible to vote in the 2006 primary election in Kentucky.  The number, slightly lower than the figures available during the last election period in November of 2004, is mainly reflective of the Kentucky State Board of Elections efforts to keep the voter rolls in the Commonwealth up-to-date and clean.  Registrations totaled 2,794,286 in November of 2004 compared to the current registration of 2,709,959 citizens.

“We are confident that Kentucky has one of the best voter registration databases in the country and these registration figures reflect our efforts to ensure a fair and honest election in the Commonwealth,” stated Secretary of State Trey Grayson.  “While we would like to see these numbers increase to historic levels, we must also be mindful that previous voter rolls included ineligible voters such as voters who live in other states.  We are now taking steps to purge those registrants from our database.”

Registration figures continued to show little change in the percentage of male and female voters.  In terms of party registration, Republicans increased their percentage of registered voters by 0.84% since November of 2004.  Democrats and “other” voters declined by 0.67% and 0.17%, respectively.

Secretary Grayson noted that the election’s focus now shifts to getting people to the polls on Election Day.  “Now that the registration books are closed, we must work diligently to see that every registered Kentuckian votes on May 16th.”  Grayson encouraged citizens to utilize the Voter Information Center at www.sos.ky.gov/vic to confirm their voter registration and to locate their polling place.
