Independent Candidate Deadline for Statement of Candidacy Approaching

Candidates seeking public office as an independent candidate must file their Statement-of-Candidacy form by Thursday, April 1, 2004 in order to be placed on the ballot for the November general election. The Statement-of-Candidacy form for independent candidates is required by KRS 118.365(5) which was enacted by the 2003 General Assembly.
“This is the first time independent candidates have been required to file a Statement-of-Candidacy form,” said Secretary of State Trey Grayson. “Candidates are encouraged to contact our office or their local county clerks to receive the necessary paperwork in order to be eligible for candidacy. In addition, there is no fee required when filing this form.”
If the candidate has not filed a Statement-of-Candidacy form, petitions of nominations for independent candidates will not be accepted by the Secretary of State or the county clerk.
The following offices must file with the Secretary of State’s Office:
- U.S. President
- U.S. Senators
- U.S. Representatives
- State Senators in odd-numbered districts
- State Representatives
All other offices are required to file with their respective county clerk.
