Candidates seeking public office must file their candidacy papers by 4 p.m. Tuesday, January 27, in order to be placed on the ballot for the May primary election.

“We are less than two weeks away from the deadline,” said Secretary of State Trey Grayson.  “Our office’s election staff is already extremely busy, and we anticipate that filings will continue up until the last minute.”

As of Tuesday, nearly 150 people had filed candidacy papers with the Secretary of State’s office, and as many additional candidates are expected to file before the deadline.

The following offices must file with the Secretary of State’s Office:

  • U.S. President
  • U.S. Senators
  • U.S. Representatives
  • State Senators in odd-numbered districts
  • State Representatives
  • KY Supreme Court Justice in District 7
  • Other candidates for offices who are filling unexpired terms, whose election is during the May primary, and are required to file with the Secretary of State’s office

“Candidates would be wise to file prior to the deadline date and time in the event their documents are not acceptable for filing,” stated Mary Sue Helm, election administrator for the Secretary of State.  “There is no opportunity for correction of documents after that date and time.”
