Alison Lundergan Grimes, Kentucky’s Secretary of State and Chief Election Official, announced today that a special election will be held on November 6, 2012, to fill the vacant seat in the State Senate, 19th Senatorial District. The 19th District is located in Jefferson County.

The Hon. Tim Shaughnessy, former Senator for the 19th District, resigned effective June 29, 2012, vacating the remainder of his term. On July 25, 2012, pursuant to KRS 118.730, Governor Steve Beshear issued and Grimes certified a writ calling for an election to fill the vacancy.

The deadline for Republican and Democratic candidates nominated by their party and independent candidates to file their petitions with the Secretary of State is Tuesday, October 9, 2012, at 4:00 p.m., EST.

The special election does not affect or alter the deadlines applicable to the November 6, 2012, regular election to select a Senator from the 19th District for the new term beginning January 1, 2013.
