Secretary of State Certifies Candidates for 53rd House Legislative District Special Election

Yesterday, January 10, 2012, was the final day for any political party, independent or political group to file a petition or certificate of nomination with respect to the special election in Kentucky’s 53rd house legislative district to fill the unexpired term of former state representative James R. Comer. The 53rd house legislative district encompasses Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe and Monroe Counties.

Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes certified that the following candidates will appear on the February 7, 2012, ballot:

Bart Rowland (R) of Tompkinsville, Monroe County, Kentucky
Barry Dean Steele (D) of Knob Lick, Metcalfe County, Kentucky

Any individual who wishes to be a write-in candidate in the February 7, 2012, special election must file a declaration of intent by 4 p.m. Eastern Time on January 27, 2012.

Candidates may still file for the regular election. Republican and Democratic candidates must file by 4 p.m. on January 31, 2012, to appear on the May primary ballot. Independent candidates and candidates of a political group have until 4 p.m. on April 1, 2012, to file statements of candidacy and until 4 p.m. on August 14, 2012, to file their petitions. Declarations of intent to be a write-in candidate may be filed until 4 p.m. on October 26, 2012.
